Portugal face DR Congo in World Cup 2026 opener

Portugal will begin their 2026 World Cup campaign against DR Congo in Houston on Wednesday at 18:00 BST.

Cristiano Ronaldo, the 41-year-old captain and all-time top international scorer, leads a Portugal side tipped to challenge for the title. Manchester City midfielder Matheus Nunes said the squad is proud to play alongside him.

DR Congo return to the tournament for the first time since 1974, when they competed as Zaire. Defender Axel Tuanzebe scored the extra-time goal that secured their qualification and described the team as a potential dark horse.

Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez has named a squad including Ruben Dias and Joao Felix. DR Congo coach Sebastien Desabre noted the difficult qualification path that included a play-off victory over Jamaica.

The match is the first in Group K, with Uzbekistan facing Colombia later in the week.
