Prof Okumu appointed Vice Chancellor of Kenyatta University

Kenyatta University has appointed Professor John Okumu as its new Vice Chancellor on Monday.

The appointment was announced by University Council Chairperson Professor Clara S. Momanyi in a statement that said the decision was made in accordance with the Universities Act and with the concurrence of the Education Cabinet Secretary.

Professor Okumu had held the position in an acting capacity since the end of January 2026 after Professor Paul Wainaina retired following eight years in office. He scored 84.5 in interviews conducted by the Public Service Commission.

The appointment follows legal disputes triggered by Professor Waceke Wanjohi who claimed she scored highest. The High Court issued temporary orders in April to halt the process.
