Rains disrupt roads in Hidalgo's Otomí-Tepehua sierra

Recent rains have triggered landslides and mud buildup on roads in Hidalgo's Otomí-Tepehua sierra, hindering vehicle travel and isolating communities. Municipalities including San Bartolo Tutotepec, Huehuetla, and Tenango de Doria are hardest hit, with damage worsened by prior events. Officials warn of hazards and deploy resources for cleanup.

Intense rainfall in recent hours has caused major disruptions on roads in Hidalgo's Otomí-Tepehua sierra. Landslides and thick mud layers have blocked paths, impeding vehicle movement, including public buses.

The most affected municipalities are San Bartolo Tutotepec, Huehuetla, and Tenango de Doria. These areas were already severely damaged by the October 10 monsoon trough and remain in a state of emergency. In Tenango de Doria, the Peña Blanca-San Pablo route is fully obstructed, isolating four communities for eight days.

In Huehuetla, areas like Huasquilla and Crucero de Acuautla have roads blanketed in mud, stranding even large vehicles. In Zinacatlán, a temporary bridge was swept away by rising waters, cutting off the population.

Cold front 16 has raised river levels across the region. In Chapula, Tianguistengo municipality, now deemed uninhabitable, the river shifted course and demolished several homes. Recently, 30 National Guard members and two specialized machines began cleanup efforts after tons of mud covered streets and residences.

Partial collapses also occurred on the Tianguistengo-Yatipán highway, with crews and heavy equipment working to restore access. Officials urge avoiding roads with collapse histories, unstable zones, and river crossings due to sudden flood risks.
