Rumours point to Star Wars Jedi: Survivor sequel this year

A fresh rumour suggests that Respawn Entertainment and EA could announce a sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Survivor in May, with a potential release in September. This speculation arises amid challenges at the studio, including key departures and layoffs. The claim comes from comments on a gaming podcast, highlighting the series' rapid development pace.

The Star Wars Jedi series has been silent since the 2023 launch of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, but whispers of a follow-up are gaining traction. On a recent episode of the Kinda Funny Gamescast, host Tim Gettys speculated about the sequel's timeline while discussing upcoming games. He noted the mixed reception to Survivor but believed it had a "solid chance of coming out this year." Gettys added, "I don’t think it’s a slam dunk… I can see that game being announced in May and coming out in September," and hinted at insider knowledge by saying, "I’ve heard some things."

The franchise's history supports a swift turnaround. The original, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, was announced and released in the same year, 2019. Survivor followed four years later in 2023. A third instalment this year would mean just a three-year cycle from the last entry.

However, Respawn faces hurdles. Director Stig Asmussen departed after Survivor, founding Giant Skull to develop a Dungeons & Dragons title with Wizards of the Coast. He praised his team's melee combat expertise, stating, "We’re experts at melee combat, so that’s something that John [Hight] got to see and it translates very well to D&D." Asmussen also critiqued past Jedi projects: "There’s probably still legacy debt that’s in the Jedi games from bad decisions that we made early on."

Studio morale is low following EA's layoffs last year, which affected over 300 employees in the Experiences team, including Respawn. Senior encounter designer Patrick Wren described morale as at "an all-time low" on social media. These issues raise questions about the rumoured project's feasibility, though no official confirmation exists from EA or Respawn.
