Amazon's live-action adaptation of God of War has cast Ryan Hurst as Kratos, the role previously voiced by actors including Christopher Judge. Hurst, who portrayed Thor in the 2022 game God of War Ragnarök, joins the project from Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios. The series will follow the Norse mythology arc from the recent games, centering on Kratos and his son Atreus.
Ryan Hurst, recognized by gamers for voicing Thor in God of War Ragnarök, has been announced as Kratos in the upcoming Amazon Prime Video series. This marks Hurst's transition from antagonist to protagonist in the franchise, following his BAFTA-nominated performance in the 2022 title. Hurst's extensive live-action resume includes roles such as Gerry Bertier in Remember the Titans, Opie Winston in Sons of Anarchy, Beta in The Walking Dead, and appearances in Saving Private Ryan and We Were Soldiers. He is also set to star in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey.
Sony Santa Monica Studio expressed enthusiasm for the casting: "We're excited to see his take on Kratos as he joins the legendary ranks of T.C. Carson and Christopher Judge who have each shaped this character in unforgettable ways." Christopher Judge, who voiced Kratos in the 2018 God of War and its sequel, congratulated Hurst on social media: "Congrats Ryan!!!! You’re gonna be great… BOI !!! ❤️"
The series draws from the Norse era of the games, where "father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human." Development began in 2022, with writing starting in early 2024. Ronald D. Moore, known for Battlestar Galactica and Outlander, joined as showrunner and executive producer toward the end of 2024 after the original team departed. Frederick E.O. Toye, an Emmy winner for Shōgun, will direct the first two episodes.
Amazon has greenlit two seasons, though no release date has been set, and filming is slated to begin later in 2026. The project continues Sony's expansion of the God of War IP into television.
