Severe thunderstorms threaten south with heavy rain and hail

The German Weather Service warns of severe thunderstorms today mainly in southern Germany. Heavy rain, hail and strong winds are expected.

Today the DWD expects heavy rain of up to 30 liters per square meter in one hour, hailstones of three centimeters and gusts up to 100 kilometers per hour in the south. In other regions the thunderstorms will be weaker with 15 liters of rain, 70 kilometers per hour winds and small hail.

On Wednesday storms had already triggered numerous emergency calls in Baden-Württemberg. The Lake Constance area and Reutlingen were especially affected with flooded streets, fallen trees and a power outage for 6000 households.

Today it will again be hot with over 30 degrees in the southwest. From Friday an air mass change will end the heat and bring widespread thunderstorms. Temperatures will drop to often below 25 degrees over the weekend.
