Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum criticized those who invited Isabel Díaz Ayuso to the country on Wednesday and said the visit does not harm diplomatic relations.
Sheinbaum stated at her morning press conference that the organizers seek legitimacy and called those trying to honor Hernán Cortés in Mexico “half outdated.” The president pointed to an “alliance of the international right with the Mexican right.”
Ayuso, on the fourth day of a ten-day visit that began on Sunday, responded from Aguascalientes by defending the mestizaje and Spain’s role. “We do not intend to give any history lesson nor renounce all that Spain did,” she said.
Movimiento Ciudadano deputy Anayeli Muñoz confronted Ayuso at Aguascalientes airport over statements in which the Madrid president downplayed abuses during the conquest. Ayuso replied by asking whether she had insulted Mexico.
Sheinbaum also referred to the cancellation of an event on evangelization and mestizaje that was ultimately held at the Frontón de México with Nacho Cano’s participation.
