Sir Alex Ferguson announces memoir on 21 memorable matches

Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed plans for a new book titled Games of My Life, set for release in October 2026. The memoir will explore 21 football matches that hold deep personal significance for him, promising surprises in its selections. It includes never-before-seen photographs and memorabilia from his private archive.

Sir Alex Ferguson, the former Manchester United manager, is preparing to publish his first autobiography in 13 years. Titled Games of My Life and co-authored with Sir Michael Moritz, the book is scheduled for release on October 8, 2026, in hardback, eBook, and audio formats. Macmillan, in association with Bedford Square Publishers, has acquired the rights.

The memoir focuses on 21 football matches that Ferguson describes as particularly meaningful to his life. In a statement, he said: “I’ve selected 21 football games for this book which are particularly meaningful to me. The choices may surprise you because, rather than dwelling on the matches I’ve written about previously or those that might immediately register in the minds of fans, I’ve chosen games that take me back to different points in my life and which, even after the decades have passed, count for so much. Some of these games are not in any television archive. They are just memories. But, in my mind, I am watching them now – in vivid colour.”

The selections may extend beyond his 27 years at Manchester United, potentially including his managerial stints at Aberdeen, St Mirren, East Stirlingshire, or his time with the Scotland national team in 1986. They could also cover his playing career with clubs such as Queen’s Park, St Johnstone, Dunfermline, Rangers, and Ayr United, as well as his international appearances.

The book is fully illustrated with photographs and notebooks from Ferguson's private archive, some discovered during a recent house move. Unlike his 2013 autobiography, which focused on his football career and sold over a million copies in the UK, this work frames his life through the lens of football.

John Cotterill, a non-fiction buyer at Waterstones, commented: “Sir Alex Ferguson is the most decorated manager in football history and an icon of the modern game. His previous books have been global bestsellers, and their honesty and openness have given us a remarkable insight into his inspirational character and glittering career. We’re thrilled Sir Alex has written a new book and we look forward with great excitement to sharing it with our customers this autumn.”
