Smart Time put down aged 22 after eventing career

Smart Time, the grey eventing horse ridden by Dani Stewart-Richardson to top-20 finishes at Badminton, has been put down at age 22.

Dani Stewart-Richardson said the horse taught her what a true five-star mount requires beyond size or movement. She noted his willingness, trainability and ability to stay quick over fences while reserving energy.

Smart Time was bought from Ireland by her uncle Tim Warren. He later competed under owner Luana Edge after previous rider Polly Williamson was injured. The pair achieved wins at Tattersalls in 2013, placed at the young rider Europeans and finished fifth twice at Boekelo.

The horse completed Badminton twice, with his final international start placing 17th in 2018. After an injury at age 16 he retired to low-level activities and hacking under Lorren Chinnock.

Smart Time was euthanised last month in his retirement field after deteriorating overnight, according to Stewart-Richardson.
