South Africans may see fuel price cuts from next Tuesday

South Africans may experience substantial fuel price cuts from midnight next Tuesday. The changes are linked to a memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran. Petrol prices could fall by more than R3 a litre.

Data from the Central Energy Fund shows that petrol prices could decline by over R3.00 a litre. Diesel prices may drop by more than R4.00 a litre.

The reductions follow the re-opening of the Strait of Hormuz and the suspension of the US blockade under the US-Iran agreement. The fuel levy, which had been reduced during the conflict that began at the end of February, is set to return in July.

The return of the levy may offset some of the expected price declines.

The German government's fuel discount took effect at midnight. Taxes on petrol and diesel drop by about 17 cents per litre for two months. It remains unclear how quickly pump prices will reflect the cut.

Petrol prices in South Africa will increase by 14% and diesel by nearly 24% from Wednesday, 6 May, due to the ongoing Iran war. The Department of Mineral Resources and Petroleum (DMPR) announced the hikes amid rising global Brent crude prices. Temporary fuel levy reductions offer some relief.

South African petrol prices will rise by R3.06 per litre to R23.25 inland from midnight on 1 April, while diesel reaches a record R26.11 per litre after a R7.51 increase. The hike stems from global oil prices exceeding $100 per barrel amid the Iran war and a weakened rand. A temporary R3 per litre reduction in the fuel levy cushions the impact.

President Lula's government presented a bill to Congress on April 23, 2026, allowing PIS/Cofins cuts on gasoline, ethanol, diesel, and biodiesel using extraordinary oil revenues. The measure addresses a 61% rise in gasoline import costs driven by the war in Iran, per ANP data. Officials state the cuts will be partial and temporary, possibly for two months.

Global oil prices dropped sharply on May 7, 2026, after US President Donald Trump said a deal with Iran was very possible, sparking optimism for lower pump prices in the Philippines.

Diesel and kerosene prices may decrease by more than P11 per liter today, the Department of Energy said, though some oil companies chose smaller cuts.

The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) has corrected a significant error in its diesel price announcement. The wholesale price of diesel will rise by R5.27 per litre instead of the initially announced R6.19 per litre, effective Wednesday. Petrol prices remain set to increase by R3.27 per litre.
