South Korea to launch global music festival in LA in May 2028

A South Korean civilian-government committee announced plans for a major global music festival in Los Angeles in May 2028, along with a K-pop awards show in Seoul and Goyang starting December 2027.

The Presidential Committee on Popular Culture Exchange held a press briefing in Seoul on July 27 and unveiled the Fanomenon brand, which will include an annual awards ceremony and an overseas music festival modeled on Coachella.

Co-chair Park Jin-young said, "We'll start with the Fanomenon Awards in December 2027. We'll then launch the Fanomenon Festival overseas, beginning in Los Angeles in May 2028." The government also plans to build K-culture centers worldwide, each with a 20,000-seat venue.

The ceremony will run December 2-12, 2027, at the Seoul Arena, scheduled to open in May 2027, and at KINTEX in Goyang. The Korea Culture and Tourism Institute projected 520,000 total visitors and about 1 trillion won in economic impact.

Hybe, SM Entertainment, YG Entertainment and JYP Entertainment are leading the project through a planned joint venture. Culture Minister Chae Hwi-young said the goal is to create an event that people around the world want to attend.
