Sports CS Salim Mvurya appoints Carl Tundo as new WRC Safari Rally CEO

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has appointed Carl Tundo as the new Chief Executive Officer of the WRC Safari Rally Project effective June 5, 2026. The appointment was formalised through Gazette Notice No. 8268 and also names Tundo as Secretary to the Oversight Team. He replaces Charles Gacheru whose tenure was revoked under the same notice.

The notice states that Tundo takes the role pursuant to Gazette Notice No. 1769 of 2024. Tundo is a five-time winner of the Safari Rally in 2004, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2018. Born in Nairobi in 1973, he is the son of veteran driver Frank Tundo and previously chaired the local organising committee of the Safari Rally. He also won the Africa Rally Championship category at the 2025 WRC Safari Rally. President William Ruto announced in February that the 2026 edition would be the last funded by public money, with private investors taking over from 2027. The appointment comes as the sport gains popularity among Kenyan youth.
