Steam Deck adds long-awaited low-power download mode

Valve has introduced a low-power, display-off download mode for the Steam Deck, a feature users have requested since the device's launch over three years ago. This update allows downloads to continue without rapidly draining the battery, entering sleep mode once complete. The mode is available now through the Beta or Preview channels.

Feature Overview

The new low-power download mode enables Steam Deck owners to keep their device powered on for downloads while minimizing battery consumption. By turning off the display, the handheld avoids the usual power drain associated with active sessions. Users can access this by pressing the power button during a download and selecting the low-power option, or it activates automatically after an idle timeout.

Once in the mode, pressing the power button or moving the Steam Deck brings up a status screen displaying download progress. To prevent complete battery depletion, the device automatically enters sleep mode if the battery level drops below 20%.

Background and Availability

This addition addresses a long-standing user need, as the Steam Deck launched over three years ago without such a feature. It's now testable via the Beta or Preview channels in SteamOS. For those without a Steam Deck, reviews highlight its enduring appeal. In the Steam Deck OLED review, Rich Leadbetter notes: "Across its lifespan, Steam Deck has outstripped expectations - and with Steam Deck OLED, Valve is set to do it again. This is an exceptional piece of kit."

The update enhances portability, making overnight or unattended downloads more practical without risking battery life.
