Survivor 50 unveils tribes and Jeff Probst shares casting insights

CBS's Survivor 50 has revealed its three starting tribes of returning players, blending old-school legends with new-era standouts. Host Jeff Probst, speaking from Fiji after the marooning, discussed the excitement of the milestone season and near-misses in casting. The anniversary edition premieres February 25 with fan-voted twists.

The marooning for Survivor 50 took place in Fiji, marking the start of the show's 25th anniversary season with 24 returning castaways divided into three tribes. As detailed in recent photos, the Vatu tribe, in purple buffs, includes Season 2 runner-up Colby Donaldson, Genevieve Mushaluk, Rizo Velovic, Angelina Keeley, Q Burdette, Stephenie LaGrossa Kendrick, Season 48 winner Kyle Fraser, and Season 32 runner-up Aubry Bracco.

The Kalo tribe, wearing teal, features Jonathan Young, Season 45 winner Dee Valladares, Mike White, Kamila Karthigesu, Charlie Davis, Tiffany Ervin, Benjamin 'Coach' Wade, and Chrissy Hofbeck. Meanwhile, the Cila tribe in orange comprises Joe Hunter, Season 49 winner Savannah Louie, Christian Hubicki, Cirie Fields, Ozzy Lusth, Emily Flippen, Rick Devens, and Jenna Lewis-Dougherty.

In an interview on location at Mana Island, Jeff Probst expressed his pre-marooning excitement: "I get really excited before a marooning... it's the culmination and the beginning of months and months of work by so many different people." He described the night before as filled with thoughts on hosting duties and production readiness, noting there are "no down days" once filming begins.

Probst revealed casting challenges, including a near-miss with Amanda Kimmel from Survivor: China and Heroes vs. Villains, who wanted to return but faced scheduling conflicts. He was surprised Mike White, creator of The White Lotus, committed despite his success: "He's one of the most respected storytellers on earth... and instead, he's out there right now living on one of these islands in Fiji."

The season incorporates fan votes via 'In the Hands of the Fans' for elements like twists and the Final 4 fire-making challenge. A live reunion returns on finale night, May 20. Probst emphasized the crew's year-long preparation leading to this 'XL-sized' nostalgic yet innovative edition.
