Two ex-PGA Tour pros surge in world rankings after LIV Golf Hong Kong

Matthew Wolff and Harold Varner III, both former PGA Tour players, recorded the largest gains in the Official World Golf Ranking following the 2026 LIV Golf Hong Kong event. Wolff jumped 1,531 spots to 774th after a fifth-place finish, while Varner III climbed 796 places to 589th with a solo fourth. The event marked the third LIV tournament to award OWGR points this year.

The 2026 LIV Golf Hong Kong event concluded last week, serving as the third competition in the era of Official World Golf Ranking recognition for LIV Golf. Earlier this year, the OWGR board approved points distribution for LIV events, limited to the top-10 finishers per tournament. With six players tying for eighth place, a total of 13 participants received ranking points.

Jon Rahm claimed victory, his first LIV win since 2024, moving from 54th to 36th in the OWGR. However, the most significant ranking improvements came from Wolff and Varner III. Wolff, who joined LIV in 2022 after a PGA Tour career that included one win and a runner-up finish at the 2020 U.S. Open, had fallen to 2,305th before the event. His fifth-place result propelled him to 774th.

Varner III, also a 2022 LIV recruit without a PGA Tour victory, performed strongly with a solo fourth at 18 under par, five shots behind Rahm and one ahead of Wolff. Starting at 1,385th, he advanced to 589th. Varner III had previously won at LIV Golf Washington D.C. in 2023 and finished 42nd in LIV's individual standings last year, unlike Wolff's ongoing struggles.

Other notable movements included Thomas Pieters rising from 430th to 270th for third place, and Graeme McDowell improving from 1,508th to 900th in the tied eighth group. The full top-10 list shows varied gains, highlighting the impact of OWGR points on LIV players' global standings.
