Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul views the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz as a wake-up call for the energy transition. In an RND interview he advocated a more decisive shift away from fossil fuels.
In an interview with RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland, Wadephul stressed that the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz must remind everyone of the need to become less dependent on fossil fuels. He cited climate policy as well as security and economic reasons for a faster expansion of renewable energy.
The minister also rejected new relief measures for citizens such as a fuel discount. Such steps could not permanently offset the effects of rising prices caused by conflicts in Ukraine and the Gulf region.
Wadephul simultaneously called for progress in negotiations in both conflicts. He described the blockade as a wake-up call that further underscored the necessity of an accelerated energy transition.
