Warner Bros. has officially announced the revival of the Gremlins franchise with Gremlins 3 slated for theaters on November 19, 2027. Steven Spielberg will executive produce through Amblin Entertainment, while Chris Columbus returns to direct and produce the film. Writers Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein are teaming up with Columbus on the screenplay.
Announcement Details
Warner Bros. Pictures revealed the third installment in the Gremlins series during an investor call on November 6, 2025, led by CEO David Zaslav. The film marks a long-awaited return for the horror-comedy franchise, which originated with the 1984 original directed by Joe Dante and written by Chris Columbus. That movie famously contributed to the creation of the PG-13 rating and grossed over $212 million worldwide, following a young boy named Billy who receives a Mogwai pet named Gizmo, only for rule-breaking to unleash chaotic Gremlins on his town during Christmas.
The 1990 sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, earned $41 million but gained cult status. More recently, the franchise expanded with the two-season animated prequel series Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai on HBO Max.
Creative Team
Spielberg, whose Amblin Entertainment produced the originals, is executive producing alongside producers Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario. Columbus, known for directing Harry Potter films, will helm the project through his 26th Street Pictures banner with producers Michael Barnathan and Mark Radcliffe. Lipovsky and Stein, the directing duo behind the upcoming Final Destination: Bloodlines, are co-writing the screenplay with Columbus.
No plot details or casting information, including whether original stars Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates will return as Billy and Kate, have been disclosed.
Studio Statement
'Few titles are as beloved and iconic as Gremlins, and we’re beyond excited to bring it back for both lifelong fans and a whole new generation,' said Warner Bros. Pictures president of development and production Jesse Ehrman. 'It’s a privilege to be working alongside Steven [Spielberg], Chris [Columbus], and the entire creative team, and we look forward to audiences experiencing the next installment of the magic, mayhem, and heart of Gremlins on the big screen in 2027.'
The announcement comes amid Warner Bros.' strong 2025 box office performance, with multiple releases surpassing $40 million openings.
