Ana Mestre takes office as Andalusian Parliament president after PSOE walkout

Ana Mestre of the PP assumed the presidency of the Andalusian Parliament today with support from her party and Vox. Socialist deputies walked out of the session after being called to order by the new president.

Ana Mestre, born in Jerez de la Frontera in 1981, was elected today as president of the Andalusian Parliament. She replaces Jesús Aguirre, who moves to the Senate following the government pact between the PP and Vox.

In her first session, Mestre called for respect and warned the groups that the chamber would not become a ring. The PSOE deputies, led by María Jesús Montero, left the session after being denied the floor.

Mestre noted that the parliamentarians are temporary custodians of an institution that belongs to the Andalusian people. She stressed that gestures and words can inspire, while disqualifications destroy.

The session also appointed the new senators by regional designation, including several from the PP, Vox and PSOE.
