Andrés Manuel López Beltrán announced his resignation from Morena’s Organization Secretariat on May 25 to run for a federal deputy seat in Tabasco’s District 6 in 2027.
López Beltrán explained in radio interviews in Tabasco that he maintained an agreement with his father, former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, not to enter politics while the elder López Obrador remained active. The pact aimed to prevent his name from being used to criticize the then-president.
After López Obrador’s retirement more than a year and a half ago, the son decided to run for elected office for the first time. He said he spoke with his father, who supported the choice to launch his career in Tabasco.
The candidate has already changed his residence from Mexico City to Tabasco and owns a ranch in Teapa. He said he will visit communities door to door and will prioritize issues such as flooding and preferential electricity rates.
López Beltrán also left his post on Morena’s National Elections Commission. He stated he will compete on equal terms and will avoid media outlets that, in his view, spread lies about his family.
