Anne Hathaway attended the world premiere of the psychological thriller Mother Mary at Metrograph in New York on Monday evening. The actress, fresh from her Devil Wears Prada 2 press tour, wore a custom Lever Couture gown and later danced at the after-party. The film, in which she plays a pop star, releases nationwide on April 24.
Anne Hathaway arrived at the Lower East Side's Metrograph theater for the premiere of Mother Mary, linking up with costars Michaela Coel, FKA twigs, Alba Baptista, and director David Lowery. She wore an ethereal Lever Couture gown made from sheer mesh ribbons, paired with metallic Louboutins. The film also stars Hunter Schafer and Kaia Gerber, with original songs by Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff, and FKA twigs. It follows Hathaway's character, a pop star facing an existential crisis, seeking help from an estranged friend played by Coel to create a comeback dress amid lingering resentments and the toll of artistry. Hathaway underwent intensive dance training with choreographer Dani Vitale, known for work with Rihanna and Katy Perry. 'Dancing is not easy for me,' Hathaway told Vogue. 'I had a lot of help from Dani. It was challenging, but I got to pretend to be a dancer.' She performed concert scenes before 400 extras, styled like Taylor Swift's Reputation tour. 'Once I got into the groove of it, it was really fun,' she added. Coel, playing the designer, drew from her mother's seamstress background. 'In my very early days, my mom made all my clothes,' Coel said, noting her preparation with costume designer Bina Daigeler and shadowing Schiaparelli's Daniel Roseberry. At the after-party at nearby Italian eatery Casino, Hathaway changed into a black Coperni frock and Versace shoes. She and husband Adam Shulman danced to Moloko’s Sing It Back. Coel spoke with Sarita Choudhury, while Ayo Edebiri chatted with FKA twigs and congratulated Hathaway. The night ended with Hathaway and Coel dancing together.
