Arsenal defender Saliba out for extended period with back injury

Arsenal centre-back William Saliba will miss an extended period after sustaining a back injury while playing for France at the World Cup. The defender was substituted in the 30th minute of France's semi-final defeat to Spain but does not require surgery.

Arsenal confirmed the injury in a statement following specialist reviews in London. Saliba played a key role for France in reaching the semi-finals and was a standout performer in Arsenal's title-winning season last year with 50 appearances.

The club said extensive assessments showed surgery is not recommended and that Saliba will begin a managed recovery programme immediately. He is expected to be sidelined for a significant part of Arsenal's Premier League title defence.

Arsenal begin their 2026-27 campaign in the Community Shield against Manchester City on August 16 before facing Coventry in the Premier League five days later.
