Disney announced that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, known as the “Wildest Ride in the Wilderness,” completed its refurbishment and reopened on May 3. The attraction received updates to its tracks and trains, planned to preserve its classic storytelling and energetic vibe while improving the overall experience. A comprehensive safety review allowed Disney to lower the height requirement from 40 inches to 38 inches, enabling more young riders to participate. The ride now features a new show scene with phosphorescent pools and glowing stalagmites and stalactites recreating colorful caverns. On reopening day, it joined Magic Kingdom’s Tier 1 Lightning Lane options. Guests seeking shorter waits can purchase a Lightning Lane Multi Pass. For those opting out of paid access, rope dropping at park opening offers relatively low lines, as the ride is excluded from Early Theme Park Entry. Riding during the Festival of Fantasy Parade or Happily Ever After fireworks also typically means fewer crowds, with partial fireworks views adding magic. Guests in line before park closing, such as 8:59 p.m. for a 9 p.m. close, can still ride, weather and mechanical issues permitting.
