Brazilian government considers resuming Reciprocity Law against US tariffs

Finance Minister Dario Durigan said on Tuesday (14) that the government may resume the reciprocity process if the United States confirms new tariffs on Brazilian products.

Durigan stated after a meeting with US officials that the reciprocity process, previously suspended, should resume following consultation with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The Reciprocity Law, approved by Congress in 2025, allows equivalent surtaxes on US imports.

The US decision on 25% tariffs and possibly an additional 12.5% is expected by Wednesday (15). The Brazilian government held its fifth high-level meeting with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and reiterated that the measures are unfair.

In 2025, similar tariffs were announced and later partially reversed after negotiations. The issue also involves domestic debates in Brazil about this year's election and ties to the Bolsonaro family.
