Cane producers may trade with other mills after La Cabaña liquidation

The liquidator of Ingenio La Cabaña confirmed the termination of 787 cane purchase contracts, allowing producers to freely sell their harvest.

The Colombian Association of Sugar Cane Producers and Suppliers, Procaña, reported that liquidator Rodrigo Tamayo confirmed the termination of cane purchase contracts with La Cabaña. The measure initially benefits 787 contracts, of which 685 belong to small growers with less than 10 hectares.

This decision removes a barrier that prevented producers from selling a perishable crop while the judicial liquidation advanced. Procaña had raised concerns over a July 9 communication from the liquidator asking other mills to temporarily refrain from receiving cane from La Cabaña-linked properties.

Marcela Urueña Gómez, executive director of Procaña, stated that the priority was to prevent a judicial protection measure from unfairly affecting producers who needed to market their cane before suffering irreversible losses.
