Organizers have unveiled the official poster for the 79th Cannes Film Festival, spotlighting Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon as Thelma and Louise from the 1991 film. The black-and-white image captures the duo in their convertible Thunderbird on set. The festival is set for May 12-23 in the French resort city.
The poster depicts Davis and Sarandon gazing out from their 1966 T-Bird, with a pistol visible in Thelma's back pocket. As press notes state, the characters 'turned the tables and shattered a few gender stereotypes, both societal and cinematic; they embodied absolute freedom and unwavering friendship.' This imagery honors the film's premiere out of competition at Cannes in May 1991. Directed by Ridley Scott for MGM, Thelma & Louise follows friends Thelma (Davis) and Louise (Sarandon) on a road trip after Louise shoots a man who attacked Thelma. The story culminates in a famous scene at the Grand Canyon. The film became a box office success, earning six Oscar nominations, including Best Actress for both leads, and winning Best Original Screenplay for Callie Khouri. Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen, Christopher McDonald, and a breakout Brad Pitt also starred. The 2026 edition marks the 79th festival on the Croisette.
