A 90-meter Norwegian cargo ship collided with a leisure boat late Tuesday evening off Tjörn. Two people are missing after the accident in Hakefjorden and a major rescue operation is underway.
The alarm came shortly after 10 p.m. on Tuesday evening. A motorboat with four people on board has sunk northwest of Älgön. Two people have been rescued and taken to hospital while the search for the two missing continues with eight boats, divers, sonar and drones.
Visibility was very poor due to darkness, rain and wind. Sjöfartsverket communications director Niclas Härenstam said it is unclear whether a collision occurred but that the cargo ship may have run over the leisure boat. The captain and pilot on the Norwegian vessel state that they noticed nothing unusual.
Police are investigating the incident as negligence in maritime traffic. The ship has turned back and is anchored awaiting the coast guard investigation. The Accident Investigation Board will later investigate the accident.
