CFO: Pinays still choose to marry foreigners

Many Filipinos, mostly women, continue to marry foreign nationals, averaging around 70,000 migrant unions annually, according to the Commission on Filipinos Overseas. CFO Chairman Dante Ang noted that while numbers dipped from 2023 to 2024, they are set to rebound this year. Americans remain the most common foreign spouses, followed by Japanese nationals.

At a weekly forum on Monday, CFO Chairman Dante Ang stated that the volume of these marriages has remained largely steady over the years. Although the figure dipped from 2023 to 2024, he indicated that numbers are poised to rebound. “This year it looks like we will return to the annual average of 70,000. After the downtrend, we will go back to the 10-year high of 2016,” he added.

CFO data shows Americans as the most common foreign spouses for Filipinos, followed by Japanese nationals. Ang also voiced confidence that the current political climate will not deter overseas Filipinos from sending remittances or providing other support to the homeland. “If you look at the historical record, Filipinos’ concern for the country does not stop. They continue their programs beyond economic contributions,” he said.

This report underscores the ongoing trend of cross-border marriages, highlighting their resilience amid challenges. No contradictions appear in the data, which stems solely from official CFO statements.
