Collabora Productivity has released Collabora Office, a new desktop application that brings the interface of its web-based Collabora Online to local devices. The suite, built on LibreOffice core technology, supports offline editing without Java dependencies. The existing enterprise offering has been renamed Collabora Office Classic.

On November 26, 2025, Collabora Productivity, a UK-based open source developer known for Collabora Online (COOL), announced the launch of Collabora Office. This new desktop suite provides an offline version of the browser-based alternative to tools like Google Docs and Microsoft 365, used by schools, public bodies, and businesses. It delivers the same clean, tabbed interface as the online version, allowing users to edit documents locally without an internet connection.

The suite includes applications for word processing (Writer), spreadsheets (Calc), presentations (Impress), and vector graphics (Draw). It supports Microsoft Office formats such as DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX, as well as OpenDocument formats. Built on LibreOffice's core engine, Collabora Office uses JavaScript, CSS, WebGL, and Canvas for its interface, replacing the traditional VCL toolkit and eliminating Java dependencies. This results in a smaller download size and cleaner installation. Unlike Collabora Office Classic, which retains the traditional LibreOffice layout, full macro editing capabilities (including BASIC, Python, and UNO), and the Base database app, the new version focuses on simpler defaults, fewer settings, and basic macro execution only. It omits the Base component entirely.

Michael Meeks, CEO of Collabora Productivity, stated: “We’re excited to bring a first release of Collabora Office to the desktop, letting desktop users work both on-line and off-line in comfort. We look forward to working with and gaining valuable feedback from our partners, customers, users and community. This release provides an opportunity to see the direction of Collabora Productivity's products, and as an open source company, we love to work with others to shape and collaborate on new features.”

Both editions will coexist, with Classic offering long-term enterprise support immediately, while enterprise features for the new Collabora Office are planned for 2026. The software is fully open source, with source code available on GitHub. It is downloadable as a Flatpak for Linux x86_64, an appx file for Windows 11, and an app bundle for macOS 15 Sequoia or later.

Early reactions on X to Collabora Office desktop launch are positive from official sources and free software advocates, highlighting intuitive interface, cross-platform support, and seamless integration with tools like Nextcloud; neutral news shares from IT sites and users; one skeptical preference for OnlyOffice.
