Deadline nears for claiming Colombia Mayor pension bonus on January 12

Prosperidad Social is urging elderly beneficiaries of the Colombia Mayor program to claim their 230,000-peso pension bonus before the January 12 deadline. New recipients started receiving the transfer from December 23 as part of the government's social protection strategy.

The Colombia Mayor program, aimed at elderly people in poverty or vulnerability, has expanded its reach to deliver a 230,000-peso pension bonus to 3 million beneficiaries. This effort is part of the Dignidad Mayor – Rumbo al Pilar Solidario strategy, acting as a transition to the national government's pension reform.

Prosperidad Social began transfers for new beneficiaries on December 23, backed by an investment exceeding 600 billion pesos. Yet, many have yet to collect the bonus, with the deadline set for Monday, January 12.

The entity's director, Mauricio Rodríguez, underscored the government's dedication: “This is part of the national government's commitment to social protection and ensuring income for elderly people in poverty or vulnerability. For this, the entity invests more than 600 billion pesos”.

Rodríguez encouraged those enrolled or on the waiting list to check eligibility at local adult senior offices, regional Prosperidad Social offices, or Banco Agrario, and then claim the funds. The departments with the most pending beneficiaries are Antioquia, Valle del Cauca, Cundinamarca, Atlántico, and Santander.

Furthermore, Rodríguez noted the measure's significance: “This measure strengthens the policy of dignified aging and consolidates progress toward implementing the Pilar Solidario, one of the pillars of the pension reform, aiming to close gaps and ensure a basic income for those without a pension”. The initiative seeks to provide basic income and address inequalities in old age.

The non-retroactive measure will take effect for new legislators from July 20, 2026. Petro argued it is fair given Congress's rejection of tax reforms targeting the wealthy.
