Delhi court defers cognisance in AI Summit protest case

A Delhi court on Monday deferred taking cognisance of a chargesheet against Indian Youth Congress workers over a protest at the AI Impact Summit. The delay stems from the absence of required government sanction. The matter was adjourned to September 28.

Chief Judicial Magistrate Mridul Gupta of Patiala House Court postponed the decision after prosecutors noted that mandatory sanction under Section 217 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita remains pending. The Delhi Police had filed the chargesheet on April 27 following its investigation into the February 20 demonstration.

The protest involved IYC workers removing their shirts inside an exhibition hall at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. It was held in opposition to the India-U.S. trade deal. Named accused include IYC President Uday Bhanu Chib along with nine other individuals.

The prosecutor informed the court that obtaining sanction would take at least two months. The magistrate directed the investigating officer to speed up the process and listed the case for September 28.
