DNA from fibers identifies unknown Carl Larsson painting

An unsigned painting found crumpled in Selma Lagerlöf's home has been confirmed as a work by Carl Larsson through DNA analysis. The identification is presented in a new SVT documentary.

Swedish researchers have developed a method to extract DNA from pigments in artworks. The technique was used to analyze the painting discovered in Falun.

Art specialist Claes Moser states there is no doubt about the creator. He describes how someone unfolded the canvas and recognized the motif as typical of Carl Larsson.

The documentary from Vetenskapens värld shows how the method can expose forgeries and identify unknown works. It airs as part of the series on new analysis techniques in the art world.

A man in his mid-40s has been remanded in custody on probable cause for the unsolved double murder at a farm in Brattås outside Härnösand in the summer of 2005. The arrest was enabled by DNA-based genealogy research following a new law change last year. Prosecutor Hanna Flordal confirms the man's DNA matches the trace from the crime scene.

Researchers have discovered ancient human DNA on cave walls and rock art in Spain and Portugal, marking the first such finding on prehistoric paintings. The breakthrough could eventually help identify individual artists from thousands of years ago.
