Donald Trump signs agreement with Iran at Château de Versailles

US President Donald Trump signed an agreement with Iran at Château de Versailles on Wednesday evening, ending hostilities in the Middle East.

Emmanuel Macron hosted Donald Trump for dinner in the lower gallery of the château to mark the 250th anniversary of US independence. Just before the meal, the American president had the text of the agreement ending hostilities brought to him.

The deal provides for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and a $300 billion reconstruction plan for Iran, along with future negotiations on its nuclear program. The two air campaigns of 2025 and 2026 reduced Iranian uranium enrichment capacities.

Democrats criticized a text with fewer guarantees than the 2015 JCPOA agreement. The interventionist wing of the Republican Party denounced the lifting of sanctions in exchange for vague promises. Israel, absent from the negotiations, is concerned about the postponement of the nuclear issue.
