Egypt defeated Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw to secure their first-ever World Cup knockout-stage victory on Thursday in Dallas.
Emam Ashour gave Egypt the lead with a 13th-minute header from Karim Hafez's cross. Australia equalised through Mohamed Hany's own goal in the 55th minute.
The match went to penalties where Egypt converted all four attempts. Mohamed Salah scored with a panenka down the middle. Hossam Abdelmaguid netted the decisive kick after Australia misses from Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington.
Egypt captain Salah told BBC Sport he decided on the penalty style at the last minute to boost his teammates' confidence. The result sends Egypt to the round of 16 in Atlanta against either Argentina or Cape Verde.
Australia finished the group stage with just two goals, matching their lowest tally since 1974.
