An EMPD officer has been arrested in connection with the alleged theft of precious metals and stones valued at R14 million in 2023. The arrest follows testimony given by Witness K at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry. The officer is expected to appear in court on Monday.
Police in Gauteng arrested the officer after Witness K alleged at the commission that she and suspended EMPD Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi conspired to carry out the theft in an apartment in Killarney, Johannesburg. The operation was staged as a police action involving the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, the Tactical Response Team and the Gauteng Response Team.
SABC reporter Chriselda Lewis reported from the scene in Benoni that the arrested official is linked to the theft described in the testimony. The Madlanga Commission continues to examine related matters.
The arrest took place on the same day the commission held further hearings, though those sessions focused on separate issues.
