The Ertzaintza detained four people on Saturday at Loiu airport for serious disobedience, resistance and assault on an officer. The incidents occurred during the arrival of Global Sumud Flotilla members.
According to the Basque Department of Security, the arrival was not communicated and coincided with that of rugby fans. Some people gathered obstructed circulation and clashed with officers, who used regulation batons.
The Internal Affairs Headquarters has opened an investigation to check if the officers’ actions complied with current instructions. Councillor Bingen Zupiria has requested to appear next Tuesday before the Basque Parliament.
EH Bildu denounced the “harsh action” by the Ertzaintza and demanded explanations and accountability. Two of those arrested were released after proceedings.
