Eugenio Maiz detained for alleged fraud in Aguascalientes

Regiomontano businessman Eugenio Javier Maiz Domene, owner of Next Energy del Centro and the Sultanes de Monterrey baseball team, was detained last December on fraud charges against the Aguascalientes City Hall. The case involves a multimillion-dollar 2019 contract for energy efficiency that failed to deliver expected results. He also faces charges for threats and bribery against police officers.

Since last December, Eugenio Javier Maiz Domene has been in justified preventive prison at the Aguascalientes Social Reintegration Center (Cereso), accused of fraud. The first judicial process relates to a 2019 contract with Aguascalientes City Hall during Tere Jiménez's tenure, the current governor. This agreement, worth 3,369 million pesos until 2050 under the concept of 'Productive Public Investment,' promised an energy efficiency program through photovoltaic parks to generate electricity for the local government. However, although the service was being paid for, no electricity was ever generated.

Maiz Domene is also a partner in MD Iluminación, a company contracted by Jiménez for purchasing luminaires, with a 643 million pesos debt to be paid over ten years. This contract has also been flagged for irregularities. Jovirta Morín Flores, a former PAN deputy and president of the party's National Executive Committee's Justice Commission, appears as a partner in MD Iluminación.

The second arrest warrant, served in custody, is for alleged threats and bribery against two state police officers. According to the officers' version, during a transfer from Hidalgo Hospital to the Cereso on December 22, Maiz offered each half a million pesos to release him and then threatened them. This relates to digital file 0079/2026.

In other states, Next Energy contracts have been rescinded as disadvantageous, such as in Baja California by Governor Marina del Pilar, leading to the detention of a Banco Afirme executive. In Mexicali, it would save over 12 billion pesos. In Monterrey, under Mayor Adrián de la Garza, renegotiation was chosen instead. On January 21 at 8:15 a.m., the hearing for bribery and corruption against Maiz Domene continues.
