Fernanda Labraña, the country's second-ranked player at 26 years old, overcame Nicole Fossa Huergo 6-1, 6-7(3), 6-3 on the central court at Hacienda Chicureo in Colina. This result marks her first success in a WTA 125 tournament.
“Demasiado feliz. Fue un partido durísimo, mi rival era una jugadora que luchó todos los puntos, así que sabía que iba a ser duro. Ella tenía más experiencia y mejor ranking, así que yo traté de jugar mi mejor tenis y gracias a Dios lo pudimos sacar adelante”, Labraña said after the match.
The player also expressed gratitude for the crowd's support: “Es muy lindo sentir el apoyo del público, son pocas las veces en el año que tenemos esta oportunidad y yo trato de aprovecharlo al máximo. Lo había vivido en los Panamericanos también y hoy, primera vez que acá en el LP llega tanta gente a verme, así que estoy muy contenta y agradecida”.
This victory is the second for a Chilean player in the first round of a WTA 125, following Antonia Vergara's run to the quarterfinals in Tucumán a few weeks ago. Labraña will face the winner of the match between Argentine Lourdes Carlé and Spanish player Alicia Herrero Liñana in the second round.
