The Calgary Flames notched a gritty 2-1 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday afternoon, marking their first victory on a five-game road trip. Connor Zary and Matt Coronato scored the goals, while Devin Cooley made 27 saves in his return from illness.
In Pittsburgh at PPG Paints Arena, the Flames started strong, with Zary opening the scoring at 2:33 of the first period. He intercepted a defensive pass in his own zone, broke in alone on Penguins goaltender Arturs Silovs, and snapped a low shot for his eighth goal of the season and fourth in his last seven games. Calgary dominated possession early, generating chances from Joel Farabee and Adam Klapka, but led just 1-0 after 20 minutes.
The second period saw physical play, including a thunderous check by Brayden Pachal on Egor Chinakhov. However, Chinakhov tied the game just before the midpoint, converting a cross-ice pass from Evgeni Malkin. Cooley, back after a week-long illness that included no sleep and heavy medication, stopped nine of 10 shots, including key saves on power plays against Ben Kindel and Rickard Rakell.
Matt Coronato, who drew a post-whistle cross-check from Sidney Crosby in the first, restored the lead 42 seconds into the third. He took a pass from Rasmus Andersson on the right wing and wristed the puck stick-side past Silovs. The Flames had strong chances later, with William Stromgren dancing through defenders and Jonathan Huberdeau deking in the slot, but Silovs made crucial pad saves.
Pittsburgh thought they had tied it with seven minutes left on a Tommy Novak wraparound, but the goal was disallowed after Crosby bumped Cooley in the crease. Nazem Kadri was denied on a late setup involving MacKenzie Weegar and Zary. Head coach Ryan Huska praised his team's first-period tempo and penalty kill: "I liked our first period... I think we were a hard team to play against." Cooley admitted fatigue but called it "a really good win."
