Florida representative files bill to rename college roads after Charlie Kirk
Florida state Representative Kevin Steele has introduced House Bill 113, requiring public colleges and universities to rename specific roads after the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Non-compliant institutions would face withholding of state funds. The proposal aims to honor Kirk, who was assassinated in September 2025 at Utah Valley University.
Florida state Representative Kevin Steele, a Republican, filed House Bill 113 on October 8, 2025, mandating that each of the state's 40 public higher education institutions redesignate a portion of a roadway in honor of Charlie James Kirk. The bill specifies that failure to comply within 90 days of its effective date would result in the withholding of state funds from the institution's board of trustees.
"I'm honored to file HB 113, which renames a street at each of the 40 public institutions in Florida to Charlie James Kirk," Steele stated in a post on X. He added, "My goal with this bill is to continue his legacy through generations of students that will attend our schools and will be faced with many differing ideas."
The proposal includes targeted examples: New College of Florida must redesignate College Drive as Charlie James Kirk Drive; the University of Florida must rename Stadium Road as Charlie James Kirk Road; and Hillsborough Community College must redesignate West Tampa Bay Boulevard from Air Cargo Road to North Dale Mabry as Charlie James Kirk Drive.
Kirk, a prominent conservative figure and founder of Turning Point USA, was assassinated in September 2025 while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University in Utah. In response to his death, the Lake County Board of Commissioners in Florida has already approved a stretch of Wellness Way from U.S. 27 to the Orange County line as Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway. Governor Ron DeSantis highlighted this dedication on X, noting it as "the first county to memorialize Kirk in the aftermath of his assassination."
The bill reflects ongoing efforts in Florida to commemorate Kirk's contributions to conservative activism amid national mourning.
