Flyers acquire forward Tomasino from Penguins for defenseman Zamula

The Philadelphia Flyers have traded defenseman Egor Zamula to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for forward Philip Tomasino. After placing Zamula on waivers earlier this month—which he cleared—the deal sends the 24-year-old Tomasino to the Flyers' AHL affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Zamula, a 25-year-old Russian blueliner, joins Pittsburgh on a contract through the 2025-26 season.

The trade was revealed on the same day by Philadelphia general manager Daniel Briere and Pittsburgh president of hockey operations and general manager Kyle Dubas. Tomasino, a right winger born on July 28, 2001, was originally selected 24th overall by the Nashville Predators in the 2019 NHL Draft. The 6-foot, 187-pound forward has played 218 career NHL games with Nashville from 2021 to 2024 and Pittsburgh in 2024-25, accumulating 95 points including 34 goals and 61 assists.

In the 2024-25 season with the Penguins, Tomasino recorded 23 points (11 goals, 12 assists) and ranked second on the team with a career-high six game-winning goals, behind only Sidney Crosby. This season, he has appeared in nine NHL games with one assist and added 15 points (5 goals, 10 assists) in 14 AHL games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, where he leads the club with a plus-12 rating.

In return, the Flyers part with Zamula, who was placed on waivers on December 18 amid limited ice time and healthy scratches but cleared before the trade. Signed as an undrafted free agent in September 2018, the 6-foot-3, 200-pound defenseman from Chelyabinsk, Russia, has 41 points (8 goals, 33 assists) in 168 NHL games with Philadelphia. This season, he has one assist and is plus-4 in 13 games, plus two assists in three AHL appearances with Lehigh Valley. Zamula's contract carries an average annual value of $1.7 million and extends through the 2025-26 season.

Zamula represented Russia at the 2020 World Junior Championship, earning a silver medal with five points (3 goals, 2 assists) in seven games. Prior to turning professional, he played three years in the WHL with the Regina Pats and Calgary Hitmen.
