Gemma Chan has shared the latest details on her planned biopic about Anna May Wong, the first Chinese-American movie star in Hollywood.
The actress said the project is still in development with producer Nina Yang Bongiovi and Working Title Films. Tony-winning playwright David Henry Hwang is adapting the script from Graham Russell Gao Hodges’ 2012 biography.
Chan told the Associated Press that a script is ready. “Hopefully more soon,” she added. The film was first announced in March 2022, with Chan set to star and executive produce alongside Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner.
Wong’s niece Anna Wong is attached as a consultant. Chan called Wong an icon ahead of her time whose experiences with identity and belonging remain relevant.
