Gotland urges tourists to wash in the sea

Region Gotland is urging visitors to bathe in the sea instead of showering to save water amid ongoing shortages.

An unusually dry spring has led to water shortages on Gotland. The region is working with hotels to encourage tourists to use the sea instead.

– We provide free saltwater soap to guests and urge them to bathe in the sea and wash there instead, says Johan Gustafsson, sustainability manager at Region Gotland.

A normal shower uses about 60 liters of water. The soap is biodegradable and available at partner hotels and the tourist office in Visby. Gustafsson stresses that it is about adapting to a changed climate.
