According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), snowfall rates exceeded 5 centimeters per hour in some areas, with up to 10 cm accumulating in the greater Seoul area and parts of Gangwon Province. South and North Chungcheong provinces saw up to 8 cm, and North Jeolla Province up to 7 cm.
In Seoul, the heavy snow advisory was lifted at 4 a.m., but city officials deployed snow removal trucks to spread deicing agents and reduce commuter inconveniences. A mobile alert was issued at 6 a.m., warning of slippery roads from the overnight snow and recommending public transportation. Light snow of less than 0.1 cm is expected in parts of the wider capital area during the morning.
Further snowfall is forecast for eastern and southern regions: 5-10 cm on Ulleung and Dokdo islands, 3-8 cm in South and North Jeolla provinces, and 2-7 cm in Gangwon Province, Daejeon, and parts of South and North Gyeongsang provinces. Most areas will have cloudy skies clearing later in the day.
At 5 a.m., temperatures were minus 2.4 C in Seoul, minus 3.7 C in Incheon, minus 3.3 C in Gwangju, and minus 5.9 C in Daegu. Daily highs are expected to range from minus 1 C to plus 6 C.
To ease commuting issues, the state rail operator plans to add trains on five lines in the greater Seoul area, including Line No. 1, the Suin-Bundang Line, and the Gyeongui-Jungang Line. Seoul city government will operate extra buses and trains until 9:30 a.m. and advises checking traffic updates, as some buses may detour due to poor road conditions. Morning lows could dip to minus 10 C, urging caution on icy roads.
