Interoceanic train collides with truck in Chiapas

An Interoceanic Corridor train collided with an asphalt-laden truck in Cardona, Pichucalco, Chiapas, on December 20. While initial reports mention an injured driver, official authorities state no injuries among the 148 passengers or crew. The incident damaged the locomotive and temporarily closed the track.

On Saturday, December 20, at 09:55 hours, a passenger train of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec Interoceanic Corridor, en route from Coatzacoalcos to Pakal Ná (Palenque), collided with a truck carrying asphalt emulsion. The accident happened at a railway crossing in the Cardona community, Pichucalco municipality, Chiapas, at kilometer 174 of Line FA.

The truck, headed for paving work in Sunuapa, attempted to cross the tracks ahead of the train, which was traveling at about 70 km/h. The impact struck the rear of the vehicle, causing it to overturn and damaging the train's front locomotive, with possible derailment according to initial reports. The Central Office of the Interoceanic Railway confirmed no human losses or serious injuries among the 148 passengers and crew.

However, an initial report indicated the truck driver was injured with probable fractures to his wrist and forearm, and was taken to Reforma hospital. Authorities activated a contingency plan: passengers were evacuated and transported by buses and another train to the Chontalpa region in Huimanguillo, Tabasco.

The section was temporarily closed for restoration work. This 310 km route connects Veracruz to Chiapas and links with the Maya Train in Palenque, part of the federal railway system. It is not the first similar incident; previous collisions occurred in Veracruz and Tabasco in recent months without serious injuries.
