Jhandu Kumar of Bihar won bronze in the men's heavyweight Para Powerlifting event in Glasgow, securing India's first medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026.
Jhandu Kumar, 29, lifted 190 kg successfully and scored 130.9 points. Nigeria's Riluwan Idris won gold with a 208 kg lift and 132.8 points while England's Matthew Harding took silver with 199 kg and 131.0 points.
Kumar succeeded on his second attempt at 190 kg but missed 196 kg on the final try. He said, "I feel great today. I feel like I am flying. This is my first medal."
Kumar, who has polio since birth and is from Harnaut in Nalanda district, overcame financial challenges. His father is a vegetable vendor and he previously drove an e-rickshaw.
