Joe Alwyn joins cast of 'Seance on a Wet Afternoon'

Joe Alwyn has been cast in Tomas Alfredson's upcoming drama 'Seance on a Wet Afternoon,' alongside Rachel Weisz and Matthew Macfadyen. The film, based on a 1961 novel, follows a medium who orchestrates a kidnapping to prove her psychic abilities. Principal photography is currently underway in the United Kingdom.

Joe Alwyn, known for roles in 'Hamnet' and 'The Brutalist,' will star in 'Seance on a Wet Afternoon,' a new drama directed by Tomas Alfredson, who previously helmed 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.' The project reunites Alfredson with screenwriter Jack Thorne, an Emmy winner and co-creator of 'Adolescence.'

The story is adapted from Mark McShane's 1961 novel, which was previously turned into a 1964 film starring Kim Stanley and Richard Attenborough. According to the synopsis, the plot centers on Myra, a self-proclaimed medium, who persuades her husband Billy to kidnap the son of a wealthy family. She plans to guide the police to the child, thereby validating her abilities. However, as Myra's intentions surface, Billy recognizes the danger to their lives.

Rachel Weisz and Matthew Macfadyen co-star with Alwyn. The production is led by Element Pictures and Astral Projection, with producers including Robyn Slovo, Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe, Polly Stokes, and Weisz. Financing comes from Film4 and Fremantle, while executive producers are Thorne, Macfadyen, Farhana Bhula, and David Kimbangi for Film4. International sales are managed by FilmNation Entertainment, and domestic rights by UTA Independent Film Group and CAA Media Finance.

The creative team features cinematographer Marcell Rév of 'Euphoria,' production designer Jacqueline Abrahams of 'The Lobster,' costume designer Sarah Blenkinsop of 'All of Us Strangers,' hair and makeup designer Daniel Phillips of 'Victoria & Abdul,' and casting director Jina Jay of 'The Night Manager.' Principal photography began in the U.K.
