Josh Segarra teases sheriff's emotional struggles in Best Medicine

In an interview, Josh Segarra discusses his role as Sheriff Mark Mylow in Fox's new dramedy Best Medicine, hinting at deeper layers to the character beyond his initial goofy persona. The actor previews heartbreak and physical peril for Mark as the first season unfolds. Segarra shares insights into Mark's loneliness following his breakup with Louisa.

Josh Segarra portrays Sheriff Mark Mylow in Fox's dramedy Best Medicine, a series that introduces the character as a happy-go-lucky local lawman in the town of Port Wenn. However, Segarra explains that Mark's easygoing nature masks underlying complexities, particularly his desire for connection after a recent breakup. "It probably is like, 'Oh, he just really wants to be liked by this person. He just really wants to be welcomed in by Doc," Segarra says, referring to his character's interactions with newcomer Dr. Martin Best, played by Josh Charles.

Mark, Louisa's former fiancé, feels isolated despite knowing everyone in town, as his personal life has become public knowledge. When he meets Martin, Mark sees a kindred spirit in the misunderstood doctor. Segarra notes that some scripted jokes portray Mark as "a little lost in the sauce," prompting discussions with showrunner Liz Tuccillo about the character's awareness.

The role echoes Segarra's past characters, such as Lance in The Other Two, where he enjoyed playing figures perceived as dim but adding levity. In Episode 5, after a karaoke duet of Smokey Robinson's "Cruisin'" with Louisa, Mark confronts his unresolved feelings. "When you meet Mark, he's 0% over her. And throughout this first season, we'll definitely see him going through the stages of grief," Segarra previews.

As the season progresses, Mark discovers the growing closeness between Martin and Louisa, a development Segarra describes as "some of the most fun I had this season, was playing the heartbreak of it all." Further challenges arise in an episode featuring Martin Clunes as Dr. Robert Best, where Mark suffers a serious injury. Showrunner Liz Tuccillo assures that "we're gonna put him through some things, but he's gonna come out OK."

Segarra's co-star Cree, who plays receptionist Elaine, expressed excitement about his performance in the injury scene, inspiring him to explore varied emotional responses. Best Medicine airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on Fox.
