Kenha urges residents to vacate ahead of ruiru-githunguri road project

The Kenya National Highway Authority has directed residents along the Ruiru-Githunguri Uplands Highway to leave encroached areas voluntarily before construction starts on the 44-kilometre road.

During a public participation forum on June 3, 2026, KeNHA Resident Engineer Maxwell Kamwana told residents to vacate the road reserve to allow smooth implementation of the project. The government has awarded the contract to a Chinese company.

The planned upgrade will turn the existing road into a paved highway with modern drainage and pedestrian walkways in urban centres. Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba requested these features during the forum to improve safety.

The B116 highway will connect the Nairobi-Thika Superhighway at Ruiru with the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway at Uplands. It is expected to ease traffic and support transport of goods in Kiambu County.

Residents who do not leave voluntarily will receive a 30-day public notice before any forceful eviction, the authority said.
