The Kerala High Court has banned the use of Thekkinkadu Maidan in Thrissur for political activities and gatherings. The court also held that the Cochin Devaswom Board cannot allow events by state government departments at the site.
The board had cited its financial crisis while managing 409 temples. It requested permission to host events without court approval to boost income for temple development.
The court directed that no permanent or semi-permanent constructions be allowed without prior approval. It set conditions on waste management, sound levels, and a ban on non-biodegradable materials.
Past rulings from 1990, 2003, 2010, and 2022 had already limited uses of the maidan to protect devotee sentiments and support the board during crises.
