LIV Golf postpones New Orleans tournament to possible fall date

LIV Golf has postponed its tournament scheduled for June 25-28 at Bayou Oaks at City Park in New Orleans, with discussions underway for a potential rescheduling in the fall. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and Economic Development Secretary Susan Bourgeois confirmed the decision in a joint statement released Tuesday. The postponement comes amid reports of financial restructuring needs for the Saudi-backed league.

In the joint statement, Governor Landry and Secretary Bourgeois noted that Secretary Bourgeois spoke with LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil on Friday, during which O’Neil expressed interest in postponing the event to explore fall options. Sources familiar with LIV operations cited reasons including avoiding peak summer heat in Louisiana, ensuring the course reaches championship condition, and steering clear of attendance conflicts with the World Cup. The news was first reported by WDSU on Monday, with sources indicating the state sought postponement until LIV could restructure financially and secure more funding. Financial concerns for LIV Golf surfaced two weeks earlier, following reports that its backer, the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, might withdraw support amid a strategic shift. LIV CEO Scott O’Neil addressed staff via email, stating, “Our season continues exactly as planned, uninterrupted and at full throttle.” In a now-deleted TV interview clip from that week’s Mexico tournament, O’Neil added, “The reality is you’re funded through the season, and then you work like crazy as a business to create a business and a business plan to keep us going.” The state has paid $3.2 million per contract, and LIV is expected to return all funds except $2 million already spent on City Park upgrades, which will benefit the community. LIV Golf’s next event remains set for May 7-10 at Trump National in Washington, D.C., with the season-ending Team Championship planned for August 27-30 in Michigan.

The fifth season of LIV Golf kicks off this week at Riyadh Golf Club, Saudi Arabia, amid significant player movements and a controversial format change to 72 holes starting in 2026. Patrick Reed and Brooks Koepka have departed for the PGA Tour, while stars like Bryson DeChambeau express mixed feelings about the league's evolution. Absences of Phil Mickelson and Lee Westwood due to personal reasons add to the pre-event buzz.

LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil assured staff that the season will proceed uninterrupted despite reports of potential funding cuts from backer Saudi Public Investment Fund. The league's event in Mexico City carried on with practice rounds and a pro-am as scheduled. Players dismissed rumors, citing ongoing support from PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan.

LIV Golf has transitioned from its disruptive origins to a phase focused on stability and expansion, with chief executive Scott O’Neil viewing South Africa as an ideal market. The league plans to host its inaugural event in the country next month at Steyn City, expecting significant economic benefits. This shift includes adopting a 72-hole format and seeking official recognition in world rankings.

Laurie Canter has returned to LIV Golf for the 2026 season with Majesticks GC, turning down a PGA Tour card he earned through the DP World Tour. The Englishman cited family priorities in Dubai and the league's global schedule as key factors in his decision. He plans to play select DP World Tour events despite potential fines.

In the season-opening LIV Golf event at Riyadh Golf Club, player Peter Uihlein encountered a unique challenge under the lights, leading to a rules penalty. Despite the difficulty, he secured a co-lead after two rounds. The tournament marks several changes for the league, including a switch to 72-hole format.

Former Ryder Cup star Nicolas Colsaerts has signed on as lead commentator for LIV Golf's 2026 season, marking a surprising shift for the retired Belgian golfer. The move follows his recent retirement from professional play and comes after he expressed reservations about the league in the past. Colsaerts will join commentators David Feherty and Arlo White as the season kicks off in Riyadh.

The DP World Tour has reached an agreement with eight LIV Golf players allowing them to compete in conflicting events in 2026, but Jon Rahm has declined the offer. This deal settles their sanctions in exchange for additional tour participation. Rahm's decision leaves his Ryder Cup eligibility in question.
